Carnegie Mellon University Information Networking Institute (INI)

The Information Networking Institute (INI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) educates and develops engineers through technical, interdisciplinary master’s degree programs in information networking, security and mobile, as well as AI and IoT engineering that incorporate business and policy perspectives across two program locations: Pittsburgh and Silicon Valley. Established in 1989 in response to a demand from industry for professionals skilled in both computer science and engineering, the INI has evolved over the past three decades to become an integral part of Carnegie Mellon’s College of Engineering. The university has received three designations as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C): Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research (CAE-R), Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), and Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO), the latter two of which are designated through the INI’s M.S. in Information Security (MSIS) program. Taught by world-class faculty, the INI’s rigorous technical curriculum incorporates business and policy perspectives. Through flexible, interdisciplinary curricula, INI students can customize their program experiences to help them realize their career aspirations. Beyond the rich academic experience, the INI’s vibrant meta curriculum offers distinct opportunities outside of the classroom to help tackle problems, pilot new ideas and develop solutions for industry and government. The INI has more than 2,800 alumni that have gone on to serve high-powered companies, tech start-ups, and government agencies — always returning to their home away from home at the INI to recruit, mentor, and inspire current students to follow their path to success.
